The movie commences from where the previous film ended with Shoaib Khan being the reigning don after successfully assassinating his mentor, thus earning the respect and reverence of the people apparently. 12 years later, he is still the charismatic and suave man with womanising skills who has extended his empire upto the Middle east on the west. His sole companions and friends are Javed (Sarfaraz Khan), who oversees his illegal and shady works for him, his old-time love Mumtaz (Sonali Bendre) and Aslam (Imran Khan), a youth spotted by Shoaib during one of his visits to the slums, where he once spent the early years of his life.
Now much older, Shoaib (Akshay Kumar) comes back to Bombay after years to finish off Rawal (Mahesh Manjrekar), another gangster. Although the city still being his first love, a rising starlet, Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha) has caught the fancy of Shoaib's heart. Jasmine is a forthcoming movie star, whom Shoaib makes famous, and showers her with gifts. In due time, this passion takes the shape of obsession for Shoaib. On the other hand, he sends Aslam along with another trustworthy goon, Jimmy, to finish off Rawal. As they arrive, Rawal switches the lights off and Jimmy unknowingly kills Rawal's apparent girlfriend instead.
Rawal flees, and soon, Jimmy is arrested. The police keeps him in for less than 10 minutes and lets him go. The police's plan is to make it look as if Jimmy has turned on Shoaib, so that Shoaib arrives to finish off Jimmy, and then they will capture him. Aslam suspects this, and decides to go get Jimmy himself instead of Shoaib. As Aslam arrives, the police gather around and attack. Aslam gets Jimmy, however is interrupted by an police inspector. Shoaib appears and injures the inspector, before shooting Jimmy dead after accusing him of betrayal. Shoaib and Aslam escape from the scene after a long chase by the police.
By this time, not only has Shoaib fell in love with Jasmine, Aslam has also befriended her. Slowly, however, this friendship apparently turns into love. When Shoaib decides to gift Jasmine a house, she realizes that he loves her, and straightly tells him that she considers him as a friend. Disappointed Shoaib, violently reacts and makes her leave. Angered, he goes to her film shoot and destroys some of the set. Jasmine, realizing that the only way nothing will get worse decides to return to Shoaib. As Aslam tries to confess his love to her, she tells him that they cannot meet again. By then, Shoaib sends Aslam to pick Jasmine up, unknown to Aslam, who is shocked to see her as Shoaib's love.

Headquartered in Muscat, Tour Oman, a division of Travel Point LLC along with Oman Air, the national airliner company and Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa played a vital role in the collaboration of Balaji Motion Pictures and Oman tourism as Hospitality Partners for the film with the latter hoping that Oman's picturesque locale's showcased in the film would help boost tourist interest in Oman thereby resulting in an increase of visitors which would in turn lead to a brighter economy. Portions of the film were canned at the Qantab Beach, Qurum Corniche, Central Business District and The Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa. During the filming, Director Milan Luthria had a viral fever and the shoot had to be called off for 3 Days. To make up for the lost time Milan convinced Akshay to work for two consecutive Sundays. This marks the first time in 7 years that Akshay worked on Sunday which he usually keeps for spending time with his family. He last worked on a sunday for Priyadarshan's Bhagam Bhag in the year 2006.
Casting
The lead role was initially chosen to be played by Emraan Hashmi, who also appeared in the original film. However, director Milan Luthria was searching for an older actor, and hence chose Akshay Kumar. Kumar is to play the role of Shoaib Khan (Dawood Ibrahim). In February 2012, it was announced that there were two male leads in the film, and the second parallel to Kumar, was signed to Shahid Kapoor. However, in March 2012, it was finalized that Imran Khan was actually playing the second male lead. Many female actors were considered for the female lead, including Illeana D'Cruz, Kareena Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, however in April 2012, it was reported that Sonakshi Sinha had been casted. Sonali Bendre has also been roped in to play a leading character in the film. The film will mark Sonali Bendre's first role since Shankar Dada MBBS. In November 2012, it was announced that the film is scheduled to release on Eid 2013. TV actor Chetan Hansraj will also play a pivotal negative part in this film.

The trailer was launched in the dingy chawl of mumbai where much of the films outdoor shoot has taken place. In order to promote the film, Akshay Kumar flew in from New York, the place he was holidaying with his family to Birmingham to watch the India-Pakistan cricket match of 2013 ICC Champions Trophy on June 15, 2013 at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. A second trailer of the film was released on 3 July 2013 which featured a narration by Akshay Kumar's character, Shoiab Khan and divulged further information about the films plot such as the characters of Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan involving in a struggle for the love of Jasmine, portrayed in the film by Sonakshi Sinha. Mohar Basu of Koimoi praised the second trailer, its background score along with the direction and action choreography and opined that the second trailer is even better than the film’s first trailer in the respective aspects of filmmaking and leaves an explosive impact on its audiences.
Ekta Kapoor, the producer of the film went a step ahead to promote the second trailer of the film by booking prime time, between 8 pm to 11 pm slots in four television channels for airing the second trailer for a large sum of money. She also spent 20 million rupees to buy a slot in a leading channel to play a special episode related to the film.
The three leading characters of the film namely, Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan, the producer of the film Ekta Kapoor along with most other members of the cast and crew visited the Dargah Sharif. A shrine of Sufi Saint Moinuddin Chishti situated in Ajmer it was visited on the morning 5 August, Monday in a bid to pray for the commercial success of the film and the well-being of the relatives of the members associated with the film respectively.
Actor Rishi Kapoor who enacted in the original version of the song in the film Amar Akbar Anthony in an impromptu meeting with Imran Khan in a dubbing session for the film gave the stamp of his approval for the performance of Imran Khan as well as the song. The reason forImran Khan concern was the approval of the watchers and the negative clout of comparisons between the older and newer versions.
The name of the Film has been changed thrice. The production first started under the production and media referring it to with the name Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2. Then earlier it was officialy named Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again. Later owing to the director being a staunch believer of Astrology and Numerology the name was renamed to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobara with the addition of "Dobara" (meaning again in Hindi) to the title. Later a 'y' and extra 'a' was added to the title thus making it Once Upon ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara!, the present title.
Controversies
Initially, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chennai Express and Akshay Kumar starrer Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! both have been abandoned by Pakistani distributors and exhibitors in the interest of four of their own films releasing on the same day but now it has been finalised that both the films will be released in Pakistan.
The prequel to the film, which was Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, had storyline and characters that were similar to real-life underworld dons according to film critics. The same was speculated about the sequel with the visual appearance of the lead character being strikingly similar to Dawood Ibrahim along with several aspects of the film like glimpses of Shoaib's involvement in cricket matches shown in the first theatrical trailer comparable to Dawood's alleged strong hold in monopolisation of cricket matches. Shoaib Khan romancing a starlet, portrayed on-screen by Sonakshi Sinha also drew attention with Dawood's rumoured affair with 1980's mainstream-film actress Mandakini, more so with the real name of Mandakini being Yasmeen Joseph which had an uncanny resemblance to the original name of the character, Yasmin. Thus the name was later changed to Jasmine in-light of such controversies.
Answering to such speculations, the producer of the film, lead and director of the venture have time and again despised such allegations and remained firm on their statement that the film is entirely fictional thereby clearing the air of rumours.

Reception
Noted film critic and analyst, Rajeev Masand writing for CNN-IBN gving Stars to the film said Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara is the equivalent of getting a root canal. He critized the naivity of the tree main lead describing them as plain stupid. He critizes Akshay for his on-screen in-your-face flamboyance which paled when compared to Ajay Devgn's sexy nonchalance. Furthermore he heavily critized and mocked the rat-a-tat punch lines and Imran Khan who appeared to be an urban rich kid slumming it out at a dress-up party. He noted a few strongs points such as Sonali Bendre's spirited cameo as Mumtaz and a particularly intelligent scene where Shoiab walks into a police-station seemingly to surrender himself but claimed them to be small mercies in a major misfire.
Madhureeta Mukherjee writing for Times of India gave the film stars saying Watch this story of deewana dons and their dilrubas. There's nothing criminal about it! She appraised Milan Luthria for being able to capture the essence and aroma of the period in which it is set in. She also praised Kumar's acting and potrayal of the Don, Shoaib Khan with bhai act with flamboyance and mojo. He gets a chance to do what he does best - herogiri (albeit less menacing, more entertaining), with charisma and clap-trap dialoguebaazi.Although she critized Imran Khan's ill at ease way of playing a rogue, the second half of the film being less engaging than the previous and the dialogues which punch drama to the story claiming them to get at times too overbearing. She ended with saying This film has its moments, but it's not as compelling as the prequel.
Subhra Gupta writing for The Indian Express gave the film stars and said that After all the shoot-outs and bang-bangs are over, you are left with a film which leaves you with so little new that you wonder if there's any juice left in this style of retro gangsta flick. Or are we heading for a third-time-in-Mumbai-Tibara? criticizing it heavily for Sonakshi's act as goody-two-shoes heroine Jasmine who is more naïve than any young woman has the right to be. [58]
Mohar Basu reviewing the film for Koimoi gave the title stars and said that OUATIMD lacks the effervescence and naturalness of its prequel. The vibrancy of the script is diluted with hard-to-believe romance, minimal story; the film falters due to lack of action and the calamity that OUATIMD reflected in abundance. This one isn't really a dull bore but fails to spark off the enigma of the former edition! Crime thrillers and love dramas shouldn't be mingled, it results in an insipid broth like this, critized the overtness of melodrama in it, the lack of euphoric stand-out moments in it partly because of the lazy script and rest because of it falling apart when compared to its predecessor, the lack lustred chemistry between the leads where its surprising for the audience when Sonakshi declares her lover rejecting another. She questioned the existence of the plots core theme of obsession over romance which seems out of the blue considering there are barely any tender moments or delicate minutes of love. She calls Akshay Kumar sleazy in his dialogue delivery, outright hilarious at times failing to add depth, charisma or persona in role that Emraan Hashmi had immortalized. She describes Sonakshi Sinha's character as chatterbox replete with idiocracy while saying Imran Khan was trying-too-hard-to-be-suave but the film further imposes the impression of his inherent inability to act. The only highs of the film according to the reviewer are Sonali Bendre's compelling and convincing act in a single solid scene where she conveys effortlessly the emotional carnage Shoaib's love had caused to her over the years and the action scenes in the first hour of the film, notably the one where both Kumar and Khan jump over a terrace together which showed glimpses of the panache of what it had attempted on.
Box Office
The film had a very good opening with 100% occupancy in theatres especially in Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Hyderabad owing to release on a National holiday on the eve of Independence Day. Akshay Kumar, using his official facebook page stated "Finally my film has released! Go enjoy Dobaara!! It's housefull Dobaara !! It's Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara ;)". Due to limited availability of screens, 1000 or so as Balaji Motion Pictures and makers of Chennai Express, UTV Motion Pictures and Red Chillies Entertainment have agreed to with makers of Chennai Express agreeing to release 1000 screens on Friday to accomodate 2700 screens for Once Upon ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara!. Thus the film despite low screens went on to earn 90 million (US$1.4 million) crore nett on its opening Day. There are many inconsistencies regarding the opening collection while Box Office India reported it to be 9 crore and other sources report a range between 11-15 crore with the film releasing on a 1000 screen count while the COO of Balaji Motion Pictures confirming the 14 crore figure.
